Next Meeting

The February meeting of the Community Arts Association will be held on Sunday

afternoon, February 5th, at the Archer Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue at Franklin

Turnpike starting at 2:00 PM. Refreshments will be furnished by Liz O’Leary and Rolf

Hellmich.

President's Message

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed the January Critique with Joel Popadics as much as I did. He shed a

whole new light (ha ha!) on the importance of warm versus cool shadows. He also stressed the

importance of lighting on your subject and directing the viewer’s eye to the center of interest.

The meeting this month will be a big change from the usual. As you may recall, last year some

of our members requested that meetings be held in the afternoon so that folks who don’t like to

drive in the dark could attend. We conducted a survey, and found that there was considerable

interest in the idea. So - the February General Meeting will be from 2 to 4pm on Sunday,

February 5th. Mary Ann Heinzen, a CAA member and professional artist/teacher will give a

watercolor demo. I know this is Super Bowl Sunday, but kickoff isn’t until 6:30 - you’ll

have plenty of time to get home, set out the salsa and chips (you can make the guacamole in the

morning) and enjoy the game!

I am happy to announce that our 2012 Members’ Show will once again be held at the Louis

Bay 2nd Library in Hawthorne. This is our only opportunity to exhibit our work, so let’s start

painting! The show will be judged by our May workshop and demo artist, Janet Walsh, and as

in past years, we will award substantial cash prizes. The show will run for the month of May,

with receiving on April 28 and pick up on June 2.

A Prospectus with all information is included in this newsletter.

See you on Sunday, the 5th,

Lanis Monfried, President

The January meeting of the Community Arts Association will be held on Tuesday, January 10th, at the Archer Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue at Franklin Turnpike starting at 7:30 PM.   Refreshments will be furnished by Dianne Ballesty and Peri Karkheck.

President's Message

Happy New Year to everyone,

Another new year!  Does it seem as though time goes faster now?  Maybe it’s just me, but I always feel as if I’m trying to catch up, trying to reach goals that just stay a little out of reach!  Well, perhaps it’s better to take a deep breath and reflect on the things that I did get  done in the past year before starting to worry about the challenges in the year to come!

Our Holiday Party was very well attended - we had plenty of delicious food and a talk and slide show on Andrew Wyeth by the always entertaining Bart D’Andrea.  I regret that the hall was so congested that we couldn’t move around well.  Both CAA and the youth theater group have dibs on the space at the same time!  I will try my best to get an agreement worked out with Archer so that this doesn’t happen again.

Well, we’ve made it to January without any really bad weather (remember last year - two feet of snow the day after Christmas?) so let’s keep our fingers crossed.  Our next meeting will be a discussion and critique of members’ work by the well known local artist Joel Popadics. We ask that everyone bring a painting - a finished work, or something that you’ve not finished because something doesn’t seem quite right - and Joel will point out the good parts and maybe some things that could be improved.  Our “critiquers” are very helpful and kind - there’s no need to feel shy or embarrassed about participating.  Having someone else look at our work with fresh eyes is always very beneficial.

It’s never too early to start thinking about making a new painting for our  annual Member Show in May!   More information and an Entry Form will be included in the February newsletter.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 10th,

Lanis Monfried, President

PROGRAM: CRITIQUE NIGHT ~ JOEL POPADICS

Well, are you ready?  What painting are you going to bring in to have critiqued?  It's time once again to get the expert opinion of one of our areas talented teachers on your work.

So - look around your studio - choose a painting, or two (if we have the time), and bring it in to learn what you need to make it a "WOW" painting.  This is always a great learning experience so don't miss it!

COMMUNITY ARTS ASSOCIATION

PRESENTS

JANET WALSH AWS

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP

Sponsored by Community Arts Association, Allendale, New Jersey

Janet’s workshop offers an opportunity for painters to grow as artists.  Watercolor and still life/floral setups will be used as “Tools” to enter into the creative process.  Using flowers as “live models”, Janet shares the thought processes that go into creating setups.  Continuing with a “hands on” approach, she guides students to consider value, shape, size, color, rhythm and composition in arranging their own individual setups.  The workshop will cover demonstrations, exercises, editing and critiques. We will also be covering the approach of painting still life from photographs.  Each student will have ample time to create, experiment and paint.

President's Message

Hello everyone,

It’s that time again - too much to do - too little time to do it (if
you’re a procrastinator, which I most definitely am!)  Well, I did put
up some holiday lights and other Christmas decor outside today -
December 4th - must be a world record for me.  HOWEVER, I am still
dithering about what to paint for my annual Christmas greeting card -
did make some preliminary sketches yesterday, so there is hope.

Our big news is the birth of our sixth grandchild, Casey Katherine, on
November 16.  The baby is doing very well, and Mom and Dad are
beginning to get the hang of this parenting thing - it’s their first,
and neither has had any prior baby care experience!  We took
Thanksgiving dinner to them in New York, then did a second Thanksgiving
dinner here at home for our New Jersey family.  Turkey(s) finally about
finished.

Yesterday I went to the annual Fern Society and Guild of Natural
Science Illustrators joint Christmas Party at the New York Botanical
Garden
CAA member Elly Wane was also there, and brought one of her
lovely paintings to share.  Several of our Guild members discussed
their techniques - always an inspiration for me.

Our December General Meeting will be the annual Holiday Party.  The
Board will provide sandwiches and beverages, and we encourage everyone
to bring a favorite dish to share - fruit is always popular, veggies
with a dip, cheese and crackers, salads, and , of course, your favorite
holiday cookies - these are some suggestions.  As in the past few
years, the very entertaining Bart D’Andrea will present a slide show
and commentary on a famous artist - American artist Andrew Wyeth will
be featured this year.  As usual, we encourage everyone to bring a
painting for the monthly contest - a holiday or winter theme would be
best! Remember, if you’ve won this year, you’re not eligible to win
again - but you could bring a painting anyway, just to show us your
work.

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, the 13th.

President's Message

Hello Everyone,

It was 80 degrees when Tom and I left for Scotland September 22 - we returned yesterday, October 4, and it was 57, gray and gloomy. To make matters worse, I discovered that deer had eaten all my hostas and more in our absence - in fact, a few minutes after we arrived, I startled a buck in the back yard and he leapt effortlessly over the back fence. But today, the sun is bright and it looks and feels like a perfect autumn day. I’ll figure out what to do about the deer sooner or later.

We had a good time in Scotland, mostly enjoying walks with an English “rambling” group on Arran, a small island off the west coast that is said to be Scotland in miniature, with a mountainous northern area, many rivers and streams and broad moors on the southern end. As usual, I spent a lot of time looking at the native plants, and thinking how I could combine some of them in a botanical “habitat” painting. We also visited Loch Ness - no monsters - just a beautiful lake with incredibly dark water colored by the peat on its shores. The color makes the reflections on the surface very bright. I hope I’ve captured the effect in my photos.

We spent 5 days in Glasgow - in recent years it has been cleaned up and turned into a very nice place to visit. We are both interested in the art and architecture of Charles Rennie MacIntosh, a native son of Glasgow. There are many buildings in and around the city designed by CRM, and exhibits in several city museums. His furniture designs obviously inspired Frank Lloyd Wright. I was surprised to find that he also made many botanical studies - simple but precise pencil drawings with watercolor washes. I bought a few prints to inspire me and I’ll share them with you at the next meeting.

I’m looking forward to next Tuesday’s oil demo by Karen O’Neil. She has shared her techniques with us before, and I think you will be impressed by the use of pure color in her work.

I look forward to seeing you on the 11th.

Lanis Monfried, President

PROGRAM -- KAREN O'NEIL -- OIL/COLOR/VALUE

Karen O’Neil’s oil paintings of glassware, china and fruit have some of the characteristics of watercolor and some of the feeling of pastels.

She achieves a bright, airy quality to her paintings that is often seen in transparent watercolor, in which the surface white is transmitted through the paint.

She uses a lot of white objects and background surfaces in her compositions, and her subtle coloring of those surfaces, and the high chroma and high value of her color choices in general, give a feeling sometimes found in pastel, in which pigments are often mixed with white.

O’Neil seems fascinated by transparency and reflection, she paints surfaces as reflected color. Colors bounce from one object or surface to another and back again.

She utilizes triadic color schemes and her paintings have an overall color theme to them, within which she is playful in her balance of color areas.

She is forceful and direct in her application of paint, with broad strokes defining forms with deceptive simplicity.

O’Neil is also a teacher and leads workshops and classes at the Wallkill River School, the Woodstock School of Art and the Art Students League of New York, Vytlacil Campus.

The September meeting of the Community Arts Association will be held on Tuesday, September 13th, at the Archer Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue at Franklin Turnpike starting at 7:30 PM.

President's Message

And another new season begins! - It’s time for the first meeting of the 2011/2012 season at CAA. I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, September 13 at the Archer Church. It will be fun to reconnect with old friends, meet new people and share our summer experiences. The new Membership Directory, compiled annually by Merrill Crowell, will be distributed at that time.

I hope that none of you were severely affected by hurricane Irene - as I write this, on August 31, we still don’t have internet access - but that’s the least of worries for many in flooded areas, or places still without power. If there’s one thing that’s predictable, it’s that nature is not predictable! Hopefully, we learn from past experience how to better cope with these events. This time, I had everything in the basement in plastic containers or elevated above the water line. Still had to do some vacuuming, but nothing was damaged.

Our summer was filled with happy family events. In July, our three San Francisco granddaughters and their mom visited for a week, then we went up to Maine to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday with 60 close relatives! (I have a huge family!) We also learned that Tom’s older daughter is expecting - that will make six grandchildren for us. I wish I could say that I did a lot of painting, but I finished just one work. The lure of my garden keeps me busy outside much of the season.

I think for most of us, the main benefit of belonging to CAA is learning how to make our art better - learning how to turn our ideas into something tangible and beautiful. Our inspiration comes from seeing other member’s work, and of course, from watching and listening to our guest demo and workshop artists. Once again, Rose Scaglione has organized a wonderful year of demonstrations and workshops, beginning with Mariam Shulman in September and ending with a return visit by Janet Walsh in May. Rose will give all the details in “Program News”.

Welcome Back!
Lanis Monfried, President

SEPTEMBER PROGRAM ~ MIRIAM SCHULMAN~ The Figure in Watercolor

Award winning New York artist Miriam Schulman is known for her exceptional mastery of watercolor. Her portraits have been featured in prestigious juried exhibitions and commissioned throughout the United States, while many of her landscapes and nudes have been collected internationally. Her artwork has been published in The New York Times and many other regional and national publications. An artist from childhood, Miriam attended Dartmouth College.  She supported herself by working in the Art History department and was also paid by the college to create different artwork to promote campus events.  Upon graduation, she received the Adelbert Ames Fine Arts Award. Although Schulman never gave up her dream of becoming a professional artist she accepted a scholarship to pursue a Masters Degree at M.I.T., which led to an exciting and successful career on Wall Street.  She left the financial world in 2000 to pursue her passion for art full time. One solo show followed the next as Schulman curated displays of her art in Westchester County (where she currently resides) and Connecticut. Miriam teaches adults in a semi-private format during the week.  Her classes focus on using different watercolor techniques and her own secrets for working this medium.

President's Message

Hello everyone. We are nearing the end of another constructive year at
CAA.  I hope you picked up some useful tips from watching our monthly
demo artists and enjoyed visiting with your fellow members.  Spring and
summer are wonderful times to get outside with your paints and pencils
and record the beauty of our surroundings - I know I intend to do that
and I hope you do, too!

Some old business first - we will definitely be issuing ID cards next
season, probably in conjunction with the Membership Directories in
September.  Also, we are actively pursuing the possibility of holding
our February meeting on a Sunday afternoon - the word on this will come
out in the September newsletter.

The entries are in and the Member Show is presently hanging at the
Hawthorne Library.  There are 49 beautiful works  on display - “Thank
You” to all who entered, and a special “Thank You” to those who helped
receive and hang the show - Rose Scaglione, Dianne Ballesty, Roberta
Oliver and Diane Kolins.  And, of course, a special thanks to Sal
Caldarone for lighting the show to perfection.  Mel Stabin will judge
the exhibit on May 11 and the reception and awards ceremony for artists
and guests is on Saturday, May 14 from 2 to 4 pm.  If you plan on
attending, please bring a plate of cookies or other finger food for all
to enjoy.  I am attaching the Show List to this newsletter.

See you all on May 10 for our grand finale with Mel Stabin.

President's Message

Hello Everyone, and Welcome Spring, I think it is finally here!

I hope you all were as impressed by last month’s demonstrator as I was. Marge Chavoushian has been a lifelong artist - her watercolors are just gorgeous, but I was most inpired by her drawings - sketchbooks - dozens of them, spontaneously capturing scenes from everyday life wherever she was, and not in pencil - no erasers - but in pen and ink! Truly remarkable.

The next order of business is the Members’ Show. I need your entries soon! To date, we are far short of the number of works needed to mount a good exhibit. Remember, there are $800 in prizes to be awarded in this show - the distinguished artist Mel Stabin will be our awards judge. Receiving day is Saturday, April 30 from 10 to 12 at the Hawthorne Library and the show will run until Saturday, May 28. The entry form is attached.

Our bus trip to the AWS show in New York is April 13. There may be a few seats left. If you are interested, please contact Peri Karkheck at peri@optonline.net or 845-623-2988.

Many of us in CAA are senior citizens, and your officers are aware that for some, night driving is not as easy as it used to be. Bearing that in mind, we are considering having some winter meetings on Sunday afternoons, maybe from 2 to 4, instead of Tuesday nights. We have checked with Archer Church, and we find the hall could be available then.

Before proceeding, we need to know how many of you would be interested in this possibility, so we’d like to take a poll. Those of you who have email, please respond to me at laniswm@optonline.net or to Tom at tom514@optonline.net. Just give us your name and say “Yes, I’m interested” or “No”. Members without email, can give me a call at 201-825-0538, send a snail mail message, or give me or one of the other officers your opinion at the April or May meetings. We’d like to have a clear idea by the end of May before we negotiate next year’s lease.

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, April 12,

Peter's distinctive style of oil painting, using loose painterly strokes, captures the essence of the subject matter.  Color and value are emphasized.  Simple shapes become expressive images.  Peter received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 1979.  He teaches workshops at the Woodstock School of Art and teaches regularly at the Vitlacil campus of the Art Students League.  He has received many awards and has exhibited throughout the northeast region.

You can view his work at www.peterclapperpainting.com

We will be leaving at 11:00 AM on Wednesday April 13th. Once again we will depart from the A&P parking lot, on DeMecurio Drive, Allendale. Please park on the right side of the lot, away from the A&P entrance. We will leave NYC at 3:30 and be back in Allendale before 5:00 PM.

We will be eating on our own. It is suggested that as soon as we arrive in the city, we go to lunch, then go to the Salmagundi Club, which is located on 5th Ave. between 11th and 12th Streets. The AWS show opens at 1 PM. There are restaurants of all kinds in the area within easy walking distance. I have made some suggestions below, but if you would like to see what else is in the neighborhood, I would suggest that you consult the website yelp.com. TOM VALENTI WORKSHOP

Fundamentals of Pencil Drawing

APRIL 16, 2011

Sponsored by Community Arts Association

Tom Valenti is one of the most personable and knowledgeable teachers in our area.

He teaches at Ridgewood Community School and conducts watercolor demonstrations

and workshops everywhere. This workshop will focus on the:

“Fundamentals of Pencil Drawing”

Ideal for beginners, this course will cover many aspects of pencil drawing techniques. Students will learn various applications such as – shading, cross hatching, simple perspective, contour drawing and value (light to dark). By way of demonstrations and detailed explanations, students will be shown proper ways of holding a pencil to achieve maximum control, producing a multitude of effects. Measuring by eye, the grid method, seeing positive/negative space and proportions are some of the approaches that will be taken to lead the student towards a strong foundation of learning how to draw. An arrangement of simple (Styrofoam) shapes will be used to demonstrate the effects of how a single light source falling upon objects changes as the light moves from one position to another. These shapes (cube, sphere, cone, rectangle) will also be used to study composition. The shapes will then be set up and used as a means for the instructor to demonstrate methods of measuring to achieve perfect proportions for drawing. Armed with nothing more than common office pencils, paper and the desire to learn, this workshop will set into motion an entirely new way of “seeing”.

President's Message

Hello everyone,

Are we all having fun yet? I believe I mentioned something about enjoying snow in a previous letter, and by now, you’d think I’d be in seventh heaven! I do still find it beautiful, and I still don’t mind the shoveling - after each storm, I clear about 250 feet of paths around our house.

My New Year’s resolution was to do some drawing or painting every week. So far, I have finished my Christmas card watercolor to my satisfaction. I was going to bring it to the January meeting and get input from the group, but since the meeting was cancelled, I decided to go ahead and fix it myself. The painting seemed flat to me, so I put in more darks to add depth.

My other project this month was not exactly art, but it was conducive to creating art. I did a thorough cleaning of my studio, organized the hundreds of botanical drawings I had piled all over the place by subject - bulbs, trees and shrubs, tropicals, etc. - rearranged my framing supplies - removed a lot of stuff that should not have been there in the first place! Now I feel motivated.

Speaking of motivation, it’s time once again to start thinking about our Members’ Show at the Hawthorne Library. The receiving date is April 30, so you have three whole months to create something new and wonderful for the show. The Prospectus and Entry Form are included in this newsletter.

Our demo artist this month is Anne Conners Winner. She works primarily in acrylic, and instead of doing a finished painting, she will be discussing and demonstrating her techniques and materials. It will be a good opportunity to learn more about a medium with which you may not be familiar. And remember, guests are always welcome!

Lanis Monfried, President
