The next meeting of the Community Arts Association will be held on Tuesday, November 14th, at the Archer Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue at Franklin Turnpike.   Refreshments will be served at 7:30 PM and the business meeting will begin at 8:00 PM.

Meeting Refreshment Sign-Up:  November, Ross Franklin;  January, Maureen LaRocca;  February, Wilma Hoitsma;  March, Alice Szuna and Liz O’Leary;  April, Gerry Bird;  May, Elly Wane.  Thanks, everyone.

President's Message

The days are growing shorter, the leaves are falling down and the nights are getting colder as fall progresses.  It is time to enjoy nature’s wonders and get your paint brushes out.

On October 20th we had our silent auction.  We had donations of 35 paintings and they looked wonderful at Borough Hall, but we had a disappointingly light turnout.  Pat worked very hard to make this event a success for CAA and she will give a complete report.  The success of CAA endeavors needs the support of its membership.

In the Spring we are planning a wonderful membership show at Hawthorne Library.  We will be awarding cash prizes so make sure you create a masterpiece for this event.

Our November 14th meeting will feature the return of Bartholemew “Bart” D’Andrea who will give a wonderful talk and slide show on John Singer Sargent.  I am always amazed on how interesting and how much new and exciting information Bart brings to his presentations complete with humor and enthusiasm.

Please join us and bring a friend to the meeting.

Fall Silent Auction/Sponsor Show

I first would like to thank all members who participated in organizing and administering this event, Lanis and Tom Monfried, Jean Masseti, Phyllis and Hugh O'Reilly, Michelle Himes, Maureen LaRocca, Anita Shao, Beth Rys, Joyce Lipman, Billie Samuelson, Eileen Georgas and Joyce Kanyuk.  Please forgive me if I have failed to mention anyone.

Secondly, I'd like to thank all members who donated their paintings.  Although the facility is capable of housing 50 or more paintings, the 35 paintings received were displayed handsomely.

Community Art's Silent Auction fund raising event was unsuccessful and disappointing as compared with years past.  Participation by members and outsiders was significantly less.  Of the 35 paintings donated, only nine were sold, with the highest bid price being $200.  We could have sold many of the other paintings in this show  if attendance had been better.  We grossed $1,165 and will net, once all costs are tallied, approximately $950, $2,000 less than last year.

The weather on the night of the event may have deterred some people but the inaction on part of the majority of members to promote this fund raiser was most disappointing.  Our unsuccessful outcome proves itself.  Only five outside people attended and possibly 12 members were present.  If only 10 to 15 more members had attended with a friend or family member, the fund raiser would been a success.

As a CAA member, I take pride in my affiliation with this club because of what the club provides for our local artists and what it can pass on to its communities.  More participation and commitment by our current membership can make a difference.  It's time for more members to take the initiative and contribute some time to assist those who already have been paying more than their dues for many years.

By this time all members should have received via e-mail or letter the form to be completed if you wish to donate a painting for this event.  (Another form is attached to this Newsletter.)  The time is short, so please feel free to deliver this information on receiving day.  Once again CAA greatly appreciates the paintings you provide each year.  Flyers are available to hand out and/or mail to family and friends to encourage them to attend the auction on Friday evening, October 20th from 6-9 PM.  Publicizing this event even if you cannot attend yourself will greatly benefit the club.

If any member wishes to donate but cannot deliver the painting on the receiving day, please contact Pat Rutkowski to work out other arrangements at (201) 818-4103.  Hanging will take place at 1:00 PM on October 6th.  The Allendale Boro Hall Meeting room can accommodate 50 or more paintings.  Hope to see you on the 6th.

Any member who is unable to make the October 6th  receiving date but is planning to attend our next general meeting, can bring their painting to the meeting.  Please consider this latter option as the absolute last possible day to donate.

Thank you again for all your donations.

  Next Meeting in September

The next meeting of the Community Arts Association will be held on Tuesday, September 12th, at the Archer Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue at Franklin Turnpike.   Refreshments will be served at 7:30 PM and the business meeting will begin at 8:00 PM.

  President's Message

The hot oppressive days of July were followed by days of blue skies and milder temperatures.  I hope all of you have enjoyed the August weather and brought out your paints and brushes to create wonderful paintings.  I am looking forward to seeing you at our September 12th meeting.  We will be having an excellent demonstration by Charles “Brandy” Brandenburg doing an oil painting.  In October we will have Eli Rosenthal who will do a one day Saturday workshop on October 28.  More excellent programs have been planned thanks to the dedication and hard work of Rose Scaglione.

We welcome back to the area and CAA Maureen LaRocca who has once again joined our board and is enthusiastically providing publicity for CAA.  I warmly welcome all new members to CAA and hope you become active participants.  We look forwarding to seeing you at our monthly meetings and activities, and hopefully joining one of our committees.

Our annual fundraiser Silent Auction will be coming up in October so I hope you all have a painting ready to donate.  Our chairperson for this event is looking for volunteers to help make it a success.

Bring a friend to our September meeting.  If every member could bring a friend to each meeting, our membership will surely increase.  Also you will have company while driving to the meetings!

Welcome back and I hope to see you soon.

Fall Silent Auction/Sponsor Show

Community Arts will be sponsoring its annual fundraiser during October. October 6th is the receiving date at the Allendale Borough Hall.

In the past, the event was a sponsor show whereby sponsors would pay $125.00 for a painting donated by our members.  All proceeds from the sponsor sales would pay for the costs associated in orchestrating the event and publicity as well as raise funds for the club.

Last year we changed the event to a silent auction, members donated their paintings and received a portion back of the final auction price (that amount is yet to be determined).  No painting was sold for less than $100.00.  This event was successful with approximately 20 or so paintings sold out of 45 or 50 paintings available.  The attendance was more sparse than the sponsor shows in the past which we attribute to not enough publicity.  We did raise slightly under $3,000 having a silent auction event even though fewer paintings were sold.  All unsold paintings were returned to the artist.  At this time, I am awaiting word from the Allendale Borough Clerk informing CAA if any special permit and fees associated are required for a silent auction.

The auction/sponsor show event will be on a Friday evening, October 20th or 27th.

The Allendale hall can exhibit approximately 50 paintings.  Your donation is greatly appreciated and the funds raised from this event further services our CAA members enabling the club to continue our monthly meeting demonstrations and show case events.

Pat Rutkowski requests any member who wishes to assist her with this event to contact her at (201) 818-4103 or e-mail me at phrtist@aol.com.   In order to get the word out about this event, a committee of at least three to four people is needed to manage the initial phases such as designing the flyer, publicity and a mailing list to be started on in September.  Because certain details for this event have not yet been confirmed, a separate notice will be sent to members at a later date; i.e. artist donation information form and event flyer for circulation.  Your participation is greatly appreciated.

Next Meeting in September

The next meeting of the Community Arts Association will be held on Tuesday, September 12th, at the Archer Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue at Franklin Turnpike.   Refreshments will be served at 7:30 p.m. and the business meeting will begin at 8:00 p.m.

President's Message

It is hard to imagine that summer is fast approaching, and that Pat Rutkowski who has led CAA these past four years so successfully is now deservedly retired from office and that I am writing the president’s message.

I am looking forward to leading CAA and yet I will rely on Pat for some guidance in my first months as president.  The board and I are looking forward to another exciting year of excellent programming thanks to Rose Scaglione.

As president and as membership chairman I want to remind the membership to send in your dues so that you can be included in next year’s directory.  Please do volunteer in any way you can.  If you have any suggestions come join us at our monthly board meetings at

Archer Church or e-mail me.

Bring a friend to our September meeting the second Tuesday of the month.  If every member could bring a friend to each meeting, our membership will surely increase.  Also you will have company while driving to the meetings!

Enjoy your summer, break out your paints or pastels and create some masterpieces to bring to our monthly contest.

See you in September!

2007 Regional Juried Show

As noted in our last newsletter, a national show will not take place but there will be a regional show in its stead.  The show is scheduled for May 2007 (not March).  Ideally a committee of five people (not needed throughout the planning process) is truly beneficial for the success of this event. Volunteers are needed for  some activities, such as preparation of labels for the mailing list, juror and judge selection,  prospectus preparation, and fund raising, to name a few.  This show will take place at the Louis Bay Library in Hawthorne.  Please contact Pat Rutkowski at (201) 818-4103 to join this committee.

Fall Silent Auction/Sponsor Show

The new season fund raiser event is scheduled for this November as done in the past.  The venue will be the Allendale Boro Hall, if available.  This location will be confirmed over the summer months.  Over the past four years, we have tried various days, times of year, location, etc. to determine the best possible time to have this event.  After assessing the results of our recent changes, we find a Friday evening for the auction/sponsor show is the ideal time.  The only location we have a Friday evening available is the Allendale Boro Hall.

A committee of at least three people is requested.  Publicity is crucial for the success of this event.  Currently Pat Rutkowski and Maureen LaRocca are on this committee.  To volunteer, please contact Pat at (201) 818-4103 or email phrtist@aol.com

Program News

I hope you agree that the past year was filled with interesting events and demonstrators.  Our next year’s line up is almost complete and I hope you’ll all make every effort to attend our monthly meetings (and bring a friend who might be interested) to reap the benefits of your membership.

We will start off with an oil demo by Charles “Brandy” Brandenberg in September.  Then we welcome back  Eli Rosenthal on October 10th and follow up with a Saturday workshop with him on October 14th (registration form is attached).  Bart D’Andrea will present a slide lecture on John Singer Sargent at the November 14th  meeting.  The December 12th meeting will be our Annual Holiday Party.     We will have a watercolor demo by Peggy Dressel in January 2007 and will move the Critique to the February meeting.  March 13, 2007 will be another watercolor demo with an emphasis on perspective by local Allendale artist Bobby Zientek. April 10th will be Ed Broussard who will do a conte crayon figure drawing .  The May program is to be announced.

If anyone has knowledge of a relatively local artist who does demos or if you have a favorite you’d like to see again, please call me.

Have a Great Summer!

Rose Scaglione, Program Chairperson, 845-323-4234
